One-Time Dose, Lasting Results: MM120 Shows Strong Efficacy for Anxiety

Scientific Rigor Meets Innovation

This landmark study, published in JAMA Psychiatry, represents one of the most rigorous modern investigations into psychedelic medicine for anxiety. Researchers randomized nearly 200 participants to placebo or MM120 at four different doses and tracked outcomes using gold-standard tools like the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A).

Study Results

  • Significant improvement in anxiety scores at 100 µg and 200 µg doses, compared with placebo.

  • By week 12, 65% of participants were responders (≥ 50% reduction in HAM-A) and 47.5% were in remission.

  • Depression scores (MADRS) also improved, with effects beginning as early as one week.

The Dosing Day Protocol

MM120 was delivered as an orally disintegrating tablet under strict medical supervision. Each participant was paired with a Dosing Session Monitor (DSM) who guided them through the experience, ensured safety, and offered practical support.

Critically, psychotherapy was not conducted during dosing, allowing researchers to isolate the drug’s effects. Participants had access to music, eyeshades, and a calm environment, and remained onsite for 12+ hours until symptoms subsided.

Perceptual effects were nearly universal at the therapeutic dose: more than 90% reported visual changes. These effects were anticipated, transient, and managed effectively in the controlled setting.

Implications for Practice

MM120 represents a potentially transformative option for patients with GAD, offering a single-dose intervention with durable results. But questions remain — including long-term safety, risk of misuse, and how to integrate this approach into real-world care once approved.

We are committed to science-driven psychiatry.

At New York Integrative Psychiatry, our clinicians stay current with cutting-edge research and we look forward to responsibly integrating treatments like MM120 if and when they become available. In the meantime, we are proud to offer ketamine-assisted therapy—an evidence-based treatment currently available for individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. If you’re interested in learning more about whether ketamine therapy may be right for you, we invite you to schedule a session.
